The 2G TVSS outstation comprises of a base unit with the external interface and system controller, and a camera unit mounted on a P&T head. The controller accepts messages from the NRTS network via an Ethernet connection. The controller communicates with the camera using a full-duplex RS422 serial link. Commands are transmitted to the camera using a specially developed fault-tolerant protocol, which can automatically recover from link errors or interference. Acknowledgement of commands and feedback information is sent back to the controller from the camera.

The SSL system provides a high video quality. The ½” CCD digital video camera has an excellent dynamic range and can operate down to very low ambient light levels with its high-quality F1.4 lens. A digital iris controller is provided, capable of peak and average modes, as well as manually adjustable iris settings. The camera controller manages zoom and focus settings for manual movement and Preset positions. The “Peak White Inverter” capability improves dynamic range through its configurable threshold and grey level and is particularly useful at night.

The system offers continuous rotation in the Pan axis, and 180 degrees of movement in Tilt. The movement is co-ordinated by SSL’s in-camera controller and achieves a high dynamic range of speeds for swift go-to-preset on and smooth movement at high zoom settings.

The system is fully compatible with a standard infrastructure, CCTV mast, roadside IP network, video interfaces and external power sources.

All data between the camera and controller, including the video, is transmitted on balanced twisted-pair links, which are lightning protected and have very high immunity to interference. Cable runs of up to 1km are possible without degradation of video signal quality or loss of communication.

The camera assembly is supplied with 24VAC from the controller. This is transformer-isolated and thermally fused, with the additional advantage of eliminating mains voltage hazards from the camera assembly and cabling.

The system is designed to perform in harsh environments, and is equipped with a sunshield to help prevent solar heating, a 75W heater providing demisting and internal temperature management in cold conditions, with a fan to distribute heat in the camera head. An external wiper maintains the camera window clear of raindrops. The enclosure, connectors and all cabling are designed for the motorway environment and are resistant to salt spray and pressure-washer cleaning.

The TVSS system incorporates a number of features to monitor operation, automate self-test procedures and report out-of-tolerance conditions. This provides an early indication that maintenance is required, helping MTTR (Mean Time To Repeat).

The 2G CCTV is fully compliant with the HA specifications: BSEN50293, MCE 1126, MCE 1137, MCE 2216, MCE 2241, MCG 1101, MCG 1110, MCH 1349, MCH 1780, MCH 1959, MCH 1960, MCH 1970, TR 1100, TR 2013, TR 2130, TR 2135.
