Gateshead Bypass CCTV via Broadband

The Gateshead bypass is one of the busiest trunk roads in the country and an efficient secure and economical means of monitoring the traffic flow was required without the need for expensive fibre.

CCTV cameras were installed at a number of sites along the A1. For ease of maintenance the cameras were mounted on trolley mount camera poles this allows for the cameras to be raised and lowered without the need for ladders or cherry pickers

Each camera is fully controllable and is fitted with a wiper. The images are fed to video servers and converted to a digital format, encrypted and then transferred over a secure broadband connection using an ADSL enabled telephone connection.

Once received at the control room the images are decoded and then collected at a central server and are displayed at up to 25 frames per second using a GUI similar to the one displayed below.

The camera images can be displayed as shown with several smaller images and 2 large controllable images or by cycling through each of the cameras one at a time. As a back up there is also a video recorder that can keep the images for up to 48 hours.

Each camera can be selected and the operator has full control over the pan, tilt and zoom. Cameras can be moved by selecting the appropriate control on screen or clicking on part of the image displayed on the monitor. The cameras can be set up to return to a default position after a preconfigured time this ensures that the camera is not forgotten about and is pointing in the wrong direction. Each camera can be configured to have areas blacked out for privacy.
