HANET - Highways Agency Network View

SSL combined forces with WSP to develop HANET.

There are around 1000 CCTV cameras across the Highways Agency motorway and trunk road network. Most of these cameras can only be viewed at the regional control centres.

To allow access to the images from these cameras HANET was installed nationwide in an 18 month period at over 50 sites with a small team of programmers and installation engineers.

There are at present around 650 cameras available on HANET with more planned to be captured within the next year.

When a user selects a camera image HANET takes a snapshot of the raw camera feed and converts the image to IP this is then transported via a secure broadband link to a central server and then on to the user’s browser.

Individual cameras can be blanked and will show as either an Amber icon (available to the user but not all users) or Red icon (not available to the user).

The user can view any available camera by selecting the desired area and then an image icon*.

Alternatively there is a tabbed area for each road within the region. A pop up window will display the image and up to six images can be displayed at one time *
